I got into direct selling in my early 50s, mostly because I was trying to figure out how to fix the “mature” woman giving me a side-eye in the mirror. My skin had gone from “glowing” to “is that a gray Snapchat filter?” and I was desperate for a solution.
A friend invited me to a skincare party, and being the ultimate bargain hunter, I couldn’t resist the massive discount on the starter kit. I mean, who wouldn’t want to grab a deal? Unfortunately, the products didn’t work any magic. Instead of turning back time, they just covered up my fine lines and possibly added a few more.
When the company folded, I was left with a mountain of products I couldn’t use or sell and a bank account that was suspiciously light. That was my cue to give network marketing the old peace out. Not for me, thank you very much.
But then, I read all those stats about how some people really succeed in direct sales, and I thought, “Maybe if they can do it, so can.” So, I dove in again. Same story, different company. Then another one. And another. (You could say I was “failing forward” at that point.)
But two years ago, all that “failing” actually paid off. God answered my prayer for something completely unrelated. (He really does work in mysterious ways.) I opened an email from a friend. She shared her testimony about a new company with a unique, patented product, and because I trust her, I clicked “buy” faster than you can say “direct sales failure.”
And you know what? That product? It’s completely changed my life and restored my faith in network marketing. Who knew all those failed attempts at residual income were just getting me ready for the right thing at the right time!
